Where traditional electric hot water functions by using your home’s power source to heat your water, solar hot water systems harness the power of the sun. There are three kinds of solar hot water: Evacuated Tubes, Roof Mounted Close Coupled Systems, and Ground Mounted Split Systems. The latter two use flat panels, and the difference between them is where the system is mounted. As the names suggest, you can mount your system on the roof, or on the ground. Whilst roof-mounted solar hot water is the conventional way to go, having the capacity to mount your system on the ground offers flexibility for homes that may not have the correct amount of roof space or the right type of roof to hold a full system. How does it work?

Flat panel systems work by harnessing sunlight as it passes over them, and are generally installed to ensure that they’re facing the sun during peak daylight hours. Evacuated tubes, on the other hand, aren’t panels at all. Instead, they’re a series of vertical, interconnected tubes that, due to their circular shape, harvest sunlight at all angles during the day. Both systems operate by collecting sunlight through the tubes or panels respectively, and then transferring that heat into a tank - ensuring you always have a ready supply of hot water when you need it, in the most energy and cost efficient way possible.

Even better – if you installed a solar hot water system after August 19, 2018 and weren’t aware of the Solar Homes PV rebate; you’re still eligible to claim!

Heat Pumps

Heat pumps are an excellent, energy-efficient alternative to electric boosted solar hot water systems.

If you are unable to place panels on your roof but still want the environmental and financial benefits of solar hot water, a heat pump may well be the perfect option for you. G-Store stocks all the leading names in heat pumps including Quantum, Rheem and Bosch for the benefit of optimum performance and peace of mind.

How do they work?

Heat pumps don’t heat hot water directly. Instead, they draw heat from the air around them, and use it to heat cold water as you need it. Just like how your kitchen fridge draws heat and expels it outside, a heat pump draws heat inside and uses it to heat your water. Heat pumps are quicker and more efficient than common electric hot water heaters, making them an excellent alternative to electric hot water for homes that can’t support solar hot water. For homes with existing electric storage water heaters, heat pumps can also be installed for just about the same price as an electric hot water system changeover.
